The staff of Slapsticon II is proud to present as our special guest, former Our Gang player and
star of stage, screen and television, Miss Jean Darling. Jean's vivid memories of her work
at the Hal Roach Studios will add a unique historical perspective to Slapsticon II. Her
recollections of such figures as Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, Charley Chase and her Our Gang
costars (among many others) are remarkable and insightful. She is a wealth of early
comedy film knowledge.
In addition to her work at Roach, Jean toured in vaudeville and starred on
Broadway as Carrie in the first run of the musical Carousel. During the Second World War,
she served with the USO, performing for troops in the African and European theaters and reading
for wounded GIs. She worked frequently during the early days of television with a variety of
legendary show business performers. She is a published author, screenwriter and is remembered
by a generation of Irish adults as the childrens' TV host "Aunty Poppy." She currently lives
in Dublin, Ireland.
Slapsticon II is delighted to welcome Jean to Boston and we look forward to the
depth of experience and knowledge she will bring to our event. In the words of Oliver Hardy:
"She's well read, travelled all over the world, loved by everybody, and she's [ours] all
[ours]". Of course, that was a different Jeannie Weenie, but you get the idea. Be
prepared to lose your heart to one of the sweetest women in the world.
We will hold a formal Q&A period at Slapsticon II with Jean Darling,
but if you'd like to say hello before hand you can contact Jean through her website
here!
